The Tumbling Lassie

I am delighted to be supporting the work of The Tumbling Lassie Committee. At book events where I, as opposed to a bookshop, will be selling copies of my book, I will be donating to The Tumbling Lassie a percentage of the receipts. I hope to be able to work with the committee in other ways.

"Back in 1689, well ahead of the international trend, the Court of Session in Edinburgh declared in the case of the Tumbling Lassie (Reid v Scot of Harden) that 'we have no slaves in Scotland...' Sadly, as Richard Blake's excellent book shows all too clearly, Scots benefitted in many ways from the slave trade in the decades that followed. Indeed, although slavery is now illegal all over the world, modern slavery and people trafficking continue everywhere, even in Scotland. The Tumbling Lassie Committee, which is a group of seven advocates in practice at the Scottish bar, have since 2015 worked to raise awareness and money for charities that make a real difference, helping rescue and support survivors in Scotland and elsewhere and to minimise the risk of re-trafficking. We are absolutely delighted that Richard has so generously offered to donate some of the proceeds of his book sales to our appeal, and we look forward to working with him to bring more good today out of the evils of the past." (Alan McLean K.C., member of The Tumbling Lassie Committee)
